Autumn is here and Halloween is around the corner. One of our favourite things to do at this time of year is go pumpkin picking. We love spending it together as a family and choosing our own bright orange pumpkins from a pumpkin patch in Surrey.
We have visited several pumpkin patches in Surrey, and each one is a bit different. Some have corn mazes, tractor rides and animals, while others stick to the traditional pick your own experience. Tips for pumpkin picking
Dress for the weather. October can be wet and cold, so wear layers. Bring wellies, because the fields get muddy.
Book ahead and arrive early. Most Surrey farms now sell timed tickets online and weekends sell out. Arriving early also gives you the best choice of pumpkins.
Bring a bag or cart. Pumpkins are heavy. Some farms provide wheelbarrows, but not all do.
Check the stem. A firm, green stem means the pumpkin is ripe and will last longer.
Look for damage. Avoid cuts, soft spots and mould, which shorten the life of a pumpkin.
Pumpkins are usually charged separately. At most farms the ticket covers entry only, and you pay for your pumpkins at the exit, often by size or weight.

Priory Farm, Redhill
Location: Sandy Lane, South Nutfield, Redhill, Surrey, RH1 4EJ.
When: Pumpkin Field daily 17 to 31 October, with weekend access earlier in the month. The Halloween trail in Discovery Land opens on 3 October.
Price: Pumpkin Field £6 online (plus 50p booking fee) or £7 at the door. Tractor Adventure £9 online or £10 at the door. Tickets needed from age 1. Pumpkins start at £1.50, priced by size.
Priory Farm has rows of pumpkins in all shapes and sizes, a hay bale maze with a slide, and wheelbarrows to carry your haul. The tractor ticket adds a ride out to the field from Discovery Land. Payment on site is card only.
Secretts, Milford
Location: Hurst Farm, Chapel Lane, Milford, Surrey, GU8 5HU.
When: 17 to 30 October. Weekends (17, 18, 24, 25) 9am to 4pm. Weekdays (21 to 23 and 26 to 30) 10am to 3pm or 4pm.
Price: £8.50 per person, under twos free. Extras such as mini tractor rides, magic shows and face painting are £3 each.
The ticket covers a Halloween scavenger hunt trail (allow 30 to 40 minutes), access to the pumpkin field and a fancy dress competition entry. Parking is free and dogs are not allowed. Wear sturdy shoes, especially after rain.
Garsons Farm, Esher
Location: Winterdown Road, Esher, Surrey, KT10 8LS.
When: Pumpkin Parade, 3 to 31 October
Price: Around £6.50 to £8 per person for ages 2 and over, under twos free. Check the Garsons site for exact session prices.
Garsons has one of the biggest pick your own pumpkin fields in Surrey. The Pumpkin Parade is a circus themed trail with indoor and outdoor areas, photo spots and marshmallow toasting at the fire station. The farm also has a garden centre, farm shop and restaurant. Ticket numbers and sessions are limited, so book early.
Crockford Bridge Farm, Addlestone
Location: New Haw Road, Addlestone, Weybridge, Surrey, KT15 2BU.
When: Pumpkin picking 3 to 18 October. Pumpkin Boutique (ready picked pumpkins, no booking) 20 to 31 October, 10am to 5pm. Pumpkin Festival 24 to 31 October.
Price: Pumpkin picking around £7.50 plus booking fee, with pumpkins paid for at the exit. Festival £14, or £12 early bird, plus booking fee.
Booking is essential for picking and for the festival, and tickets are not sold at the gate. This year the festival is an Alice in Wonderland theatrical adventure with actors, circus acts, riddles and a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. Sessions run 10am to 12pm, 12.30pm to 2.30pm and 3pm to 5pm.
Bocketts Farm, Leatherhead
Location: Young Street, Fetcham, Leatherhead, Surrey, KT22 9BS.
When: Little Pumpkins Week 17 to 23 October. Wizards and Witches Week 24 October to 1 November.
Price: Farm entry ticket, booked online. Check the Bocketts site for current prices.
Bocketts is a farm park rather than a pick your own field. Both weeks include the Pumpkin Village for games and photos, alongside the usual animals, play areas and farm activities. Hobbledown Epsom
Location: Hobbledown Adventure Farm Park and Zoo, Epsom, Surrey.
When: 26 September to 1 November
Price: General admission £16.50 to £19 per person. Family tickets from £95 for 3 to 5 people.
Thousands of pumpkins are displayed around the park, with photo backdrops and a front lawn display. Admission includes the normal park attractions, and pumpkins to take home cost extra. There is also a Trick or Treat Trail on weekends and school holidays, and marshmallow toasting for an additional fee.
Hans Christmas Andersen, Godalming
Location: Van Arnhem Nursery, Priorsfield Road, Godalming, Surrey, GU7 2RQ.
When: Mid October to 31 October, 10am to 4pm
Price: Free entry and free parking. You pay for the pumpkins you pick.
This is the best budget option in Surrey. There are about 8,000 pumpkins in 18 varieties, plus a bean bag toss, a pirate ship and mini tractors. Some weekends have animals, including miniature donkeys and owls. No booking is needed and dogs are welcome on leads, but not in the pumpkin patch.
Mayfield’s Secret Lavender Garden, Epsom
Location: 139 Reigate Road, Epsom, Surrey, KT17 3DW.
When: 3 to 31 October, Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm, Sunday 10am to 4pm.

Mayfield turns its lavender garden into a Halloween event called Malice Returns: The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. It is more of a story trail than a pumpkin field, so it suits families who want a Halloween theme over a big pick your own patch.
